Hungary has a landscape of plains, rolling hills, rivers, lakes, and low mountains. The Great Hungarian Plain, also called the Alföld, covers a large part of the eastern and southeastern country.
Two major rivers, the Danube and the Tisza, flow through Hungary. Lake Balaton, located in western Hungary, is the largest lake in Central Europe and a popular destination for swimming and outdoor recreation.
Hungary has a temperate continental climate, with warm summers and cold winters. The country is also known for its natural thermal springs, which supply many famous baths.
🏰 A Brief History of Hungary
The territory of modern Hungary was inhabited by ancient peoples and later became partly incorporated into the Roman Empire. Magyar tribes settled in the Carpathian Basin near the end of the ninth century.
Hungary became a Christian kingdom around the year 1000 under King Stephen I. During the Middle Ages, it developed into an important European kingdom.
Parts of Hungary later came under Ottoman rule, while other areas were governed by the Habsburg monarchy. In 1867, Hungary became one of the two main parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
After World War I, Hungary became an independent state with greatly reduced territory. It experienced communist rule after World War II and transitioned to a multiparty political system in 1989. Today, Hungary is a parliamentary republic and a member of the European Union.
🎨 People, Language, and Hungarian Culture
Hungarian, also called Magyar, is the official language of Hungary. Unlike most neighboring languages, Hungarian belongs to the Uralic language family.
Hungarian culture is known for folk music, traditional dances, colorful embroidery, pottery, and regional festivals. The csárdás is a well-known traditional Hungarian dance.
Hungary also has a strong musical heritage, including composers such as Franz Liszt and Béla Bartók. Traditional crafts and folk costumes remain important parts of regional cultural identity.
🥘 Traditional Food in Hungary
Hungarian cuisine is famous for its flavorful dishes, especially those seasoned with paprika, a spice made from dried peppers.
Popular foods include gulyás (goulash, a hearty meat and vegetable soup), chicken paprikash (chicken cooked in a paprika-based sauce), and lángos (fried flatbread often topped with sour cream and cheese).
Traditional desserts include kürtőskalács, a sweet spiral-shaped chimney cake, and dobos torte, a layered sponge cake with chocolate buttercream and caramel.
🦌 Wildlife and Natural Habitats
Hungary's grasslands, forests, wetlands, and rivers support red deer, roe deer, wild boar, foxes, otters, and many bird species.
