🏰 A Brief History of Poland

Poland developed as a medieval state under the Piast dynasty during the tenth century. Mieszko I, an early Polish ruler, adopted Christianity in 966, an important event in Polish history.

Poland later formed a powerful union with Lithuania, creating the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1569. This large state became an important political and cultural center in Europe.

During the late eighteenth century, Poland was divided among neighboring powers and disappeared from the political map as an independent state. It regained independence in 1918 after World War I.

Poland suffered enormous destruction and loss of life during World War II, including the Nazi German occupation and the Holocaust. After decades of communist rule, democratic changes began in 1989. Today, Poland is a parliamentary republic and a member of the European Union.
