Its capital, Lisbon, is located near the mouth of the Tagus River. Other important cities include Porto, Braga, Coimbra, and Faro.

Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in mainland Portugal. The country's highest point overall is Mount Pico, a volcanic mountain in the Azores, reaching approximately 2,351 meters.
Much of Portugal has a Mediterranean-influenced climate, with warm, dry summers and wetter winters. Northern areas are generally cooler and wetter, while the southern Algarve region is known for its sunny coastal climate.
⛵ A Brief History of Portugal
The region now known as Portugal was home to ancient communities before becoming part of the Roman Empire. Later, Germanic kingdoms and Muslim rulers influenced the Iberian Peninsula.
Portugal developed as an independent kingdom during the twelfth century. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Portuguese navigators explored Atlantic and Indian Ocean routes, establishing trade networks and overseas colonies.
Explorers such as Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco da Gama became important figures in maritime history. This period also brought conquest, colonial exploitation, and the enslavement of people across different regions.
Portugal became a republic in 1910. After decades of authoritarian government, the Carnation Revolution of 1974 helped restore democracy. Today, Portugal is a democratic republic and a member of the European Union.
🎨 People, Language, and Portuguese Culture
Portuguese is the official language of Portugal and is spoken in several countries around the world, including Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique.
Portugal is known for its azulejos, decorative ceramic tiles that often feature blue-and-white patterns or colorful scenes. These tiles decorate buildings, churches, railway stations, and public spaces.
Traditional Portuguese culture includes fado music, local festivals, regional crafts, and folk dancing. Fado is a distinctive musical tradition known for expressive singing and accompaniment by string instruments.

Portuguese cuisine features seafood, olive oil, vegetables, bread, rice, and regional cheeses. Its Atlantic location has strongly influenced traditional cooking.
