🏰 A Brief History of Albania
People have lived in the region now known as Albania for thousands of years. Ancient Illyrian communities inhabited much of the western Balkans before the area came under Roman rule.
During the Middle Ages, the region was influenced by Byzantine and other European powers. In the fifteenth century, the Albanian leader Skanderbeg became famous for resisting Ottoman expansion.
Albania remained under Ottoman rule for several centuries before declaring independence in 1912. During the twentieth century, the country experienced World War II and decades of communist rule.
Albania became a multiparty democracy in the early 1990s. Today, it is an independent parliamentary republic.
🎨 People, Language, and Albanian Culture
Albanian is the official language of Albania and has two major dialect groups, Gheg and Tosk. The country's traditions reflect its long history and connections with Mediterranean and Balkan cultures.
Traditional Albanian culture includes folk music, colorful clothing, storytelling, dancing, and local festivals. The iso-polyphonic singing tradition of southern Albania is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
Hospitality is an important cultural value, and traditional celebrations often bring families and communities together.
🥧 Traditional Food in Albania
Albanian cuisine combines Mediterranean and Balkan influences, with ingredients such as vegetables, olive oil, cheese, meat, herbs, and fresh bread.
Popular foods include byrek (a savory pastry with fillings such as cheese or spinach), tavë kosi (baked lamb with yogurt), and fërgesë (a traditional dish made with peppers, tomatoes, and cheese).
Other traditional foods include qofte (seasoned meatballs) and various regional breads and pastries.
