The country is often called the DR Congo or DRC to distinguish it from the neighboring Republic of the Congo. It also has a short coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.

🌿 Geography and the Congo Basin

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the largest countries in Africa. Much of its central region is part of the Congo Basin, which contains vast tropical rainforests, rivers, wetlands, and an extraordinary variety of plants and animals.

The country's landscapes change dramatically toward its borders. Eastern areas include mountains, volcanoes, deep lakes, and highlands, while other regions contain savannas, plateaus, forests, and river valleys.

🌊 The Congo River

The Congo River and its many tributaries form an enormous river system across the country. The river is one of Africa's longest and carries an immense amount of water through the Congo Basin.

Rivers are important for transportation, fishing, wildlife, and communities, especially in areas where dense rainforest makes travel by road difficult.

🏙️ Kinshasa and Other Cities

Kinshasa is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It lies along the Congo River directly across from Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo.

Other important cities include Lubumbashi, Kisangani, Goma, Bukavu, and Mbuji-Mayi. These cities are located across very different geographical regions of this enormous country.

🌋 Mountains, Volcanoes, and Lakes

Eastern DR Congo has some of the country's most dramatic landscapes. The region includes mountains, volcanoes, forests, and several large lakes along the East African Rift system.

Mount Nyiragongo is an active volcano located near the city of Goma. Large lakes in and around eastern DR Congo include Lake Tanganyika, Lake Kivu, Lake Edward, and Lake Albert.

🦍 Wildlife and Rainforests

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to extraordinary wildlife. Its forests provide habitats for gorillas, chimpanzees, forest elephants, monkeys, colorful birds, and many other animals.

The country is also the only place in the world where bonobos live naturally in the wild. Another remarkable animal is the okapi, a forest-dwelling relative of the giraffe found in the northeastern rainforests of the country.

National parks and protected areas help conserve these species and their habitats.

🥁 Culture and Traditions

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is home to many cultural and linguistic communities. French is the official language, while Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo, Tshiluba, and many other languages are spoken across the country.
