Senegal is located on the westernmost part of mainland Africa and has a long coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. It shares borders with Mauritania, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Gambia.
Gambia forms a narrow strip of land extending into Senegal from the Atlantic coast, giving Senegal a distinctive shape on the map. The southern part of Senegal below Gambia is known as the Casamance region.
