Latvia shares land borders with Estonia to the north, Lithuania to the south, Russia to the east, and Belarus to the southeast. The Baltic Sea and Gulf of Riga lie along its western and northern coastlines.
Its capital, Riga, is located near the mouth of the Daugava River and is the country's largest city.
🌲 Geography, Climate, and Natural Landscapes
Latvia has a mostly low-lying landscape with extensive forests, rivers, lakes, wetlands, and sandy beaches. The Daugava and Gauja are two of its important rivers, while Gauja National Park is known for its wooded valleys and sandstone cliffs.
Latvia experiences four distinct seasons. Summers are generally mild to warm, while winters can be cold and snowy. The Baltic Sea influences the climate, especially in coastal areas.
Forests and wetlands cover large parts of Latvia, providing important habitats for wildlife and opportunities to study natural ecosystems.
🏰 A Brief History of Latvia
People have lived in the region now known as Latvia for thousands of years. Early communities developed traditions connected to farming, fishing, trade, and the Baltic Sea.
During the Middle Ages, German crusaders established political and religious control over much of the region. Riga became an important trading city and joined the Hanseatic League. Different parts of Latvia later experienced Polish-Lithuanian, Swedish, and Russian rule.
Latvia declared independence on November 18, 1918. After Soviet and Nazi occupations during World War II, Latvia remained under Soviet rule until its independence was fully restored in 1991.
Today, Latvia is an independent democratic republic and a member of the European Union.
🎶 People, Language, and Latvian Culture
Latvian is Latvia's official language. It belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family and is closely related to Lithuanian.
Traditional folk songs, called dainas, are an important part of Latvian cultural heritage. Latvia is also famous for its large Song and Dance Celebration, which brings together singers and dancers from across the country.
Jāņi, Latvia's traditional Midsummer celebration, includes singing, flower wreaths, bonfires, and gatherings with family and friends. Traditional handicrafts, weaving, and folk costumes are also important cultural expressions.
